What is an Atom?


This video does a good job of explaining what an atom is using several examples. 


In talking about how atoms make up molecules, we decided to build some bonds using our bodies! 


I am very tiny. Kids like to build castles out of me. I absorb heat from the sun. I am found at the beach. What am I?
Sand- SiO2


I am blue in colour. I have been featured in cleaning commercials. I clean glass surfaces. I come out of a spray bottle. What am I?
Windex- NH3

Living things need me. I am cool to the touch. I take the shape of any container. You can drink me. What am I?
Water- H20

I am a gas. Plants absorb me. I can found in your exhales. What am I?
Carbon Dioxide- CO2

I am a grainy and white. Bakers and chefs use me to add taste to a recipe. Don’t add too much! What am I?
Table Salt- NaCl

I am used in baking. I am soft to the touch. When wet, I release carbon dioxide which is what helps make food rise. What am I?
Baking Powder- NaHCO3

I am a writing utensil. I can be many colours. You can take me outside. I hope it doesn’t rain. What am I?
Chalk- CaCO3

I like to break apart food. I am very strong. You can find me in your body. Don’t let this liquid touch your skin. What am I?
Stomach Acid- HCl
