Indigenous Education With Mrs. Kevier

On Friday, Mrs. Keiver introduced the class to another group of indigenous people, the Inuit! We talked about where they live, and how they survived/survive living in the harshest of climates! Mrs. Keiver showed us a few traditional games and let the students try them out. Back then, the purpose of these games was to build your strength and skill so you could be a successful hunting and gathering food up in the North!

Chill City

Today in Science we experimented with how to bring light and warmth to a cold town that doesn't see the sun throughout the winter. This experiment was based on a real problem that occurred in a small town in Norway. With limited supplies, the students were asked to construct a model, then diagram how they would bring light and warmth to what we were calling "Chill" city. Here are some photos of the students working together to solve the challenge.

What a day! We started off with gym and discussed the importance of heart health and physical activities that are great for heart health- skipping! We took this time to challenge our bodies and skill set. We wanted to see how many times we could skip consecutively and how many different ways we could skip individually (forwards, backwards, cross-overs, double skips, one-footed, etc.). Secondly, we took the students outside to learn a bit about Thermal Energy. Their challenge was to build a shelter for their stuffed animal, and see if they could keep it warmer than the air temperature outside the shelter. Lastly, we finished off with some work on our Multicultural Fair projects. The students are so excited to show off their hard work!
