Indigenous Education With Mrs. Kevier

On Friday, Mrs. Keiver introduced the class to another group of indigenous people, the Inuit! We talked about where they live, and how they survived/survive living in the harshest of climates! Mrs. Keiver showed us a few traditional games and let the students try them out. Back then, the purpose of these games was to build your strength and skill so you could be a successful hunting and gathering food up in the North!

Outdoor Education: Bird Feeders and Sanctuaries

The students have been learning a lot about questions, specifically, what a "red light" and "green light" looks like. Last week I posed a question to the grade threes... How do animals survive harsh winters? From this we were able to develop and create more questions. -what animals might be affected? -how have animals adapted to survive the winter months? -how/or has climate change contributed to these harsh conditions? So we discussed these questions and brainstormed answers. Throughout all the discussion we wondered about birds what happens if they migrate home too early? So we empathized with the birds, separated into groups, and created feeders and sanctuaries for our local birds! *Warning: no birds were harmed, captured, or used in this project. We would like to continue to monitor our feeders, along with diving deeper into our inquiries and wonders! ...

Chill City

Today in Science we experimented with how to bring light and warmth to a cold town that doesn't see the sun throughout the winter. This experiment was based on a real problem that occurred in a small town in Norway. With limited supplies, the students were asked to construct a model, then diagram how they would bring light and warmth to what we were calling "Chill" city. Here are some photos of the students working together to solve the challenge.
